ENVIRONMENT Secretary Lito Atienza yesterday said the garbage disposal problem in Metro Manila and nearby provinces can be addressed with the construction of a landfill isolated in an island.
Although Atienza refused to name an idle island where a landfill can be constructed, he said the country has so many brilliant engineers who can design a disposal facility beneficial to the people’s health and to the government.
The DENR chief cited a landfill in Pulao, Semaku, Singapore which is located in a reclaimed 350-hectare island serving as its primary waste disposal area.
Opened in 1999, the garbage disposal facility can accommodate at least 63 million cubic meters of trash even beyond year 2045.
The landfill also serves as eco-tourism destination where tourists can do some fishing, bird watching and star gazing.
Atienza said the presence of 713 open dump sites in the country is in violation of Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act.
